‘Beep’!  The quiet sound of the starter gun echoes madly throughout the aquatic centre.  Swimmers chasing fame, glory and a handy selection in the Darling Downs Swim team all explode from the blocks in one great force.  Months of training, weeks of sacrifice and never-ending days feeding on a diet of good nutrition with a dash of self-belief have all culminated in this one thrilling moment.  Can they storm home with a Personal Best time and secure possible selection in the team?  Only one way to find out…go!

This was the feeling of our 10 Inglewood State School swimmers who competed recently at the Darling Downs Swim Trials at Gatton on Wednesday, 2 March.  Our local swimming club, ably led by Coach Naomi, have been growing in strength and a total of 14 members made it through to the trials. All competed well on the day, still cracking a few “PB’s”, which ensured that those who have worked with the students in their lead-up to the big day were enormously proud of their achievements.  Certainly, our Inglewood State School squad of 10 was our largest for many years and their success was testimony to the hard effort and commitment of the competitors and the support of their families. Well done to Erin Fearby, Caleb Braden, Ruby Wright, Eloise Pietsch, Heath Loughnan, Molly West, Madi Slack, Hamish Loughnan, Harry Wright and Emily Forster - you swam like champions!

Special mention must be made of Harry Wright, who gained selection in the Darling Downs team in not 1 but 5 events!  Harry combines natural talent with a very strong training ethic and this combination is, no doubt, the secret to his overall success.  Harry spent many days training over his summer holiday and his efforts have certainly paid off.  He is all set to compete at the State Titles in Brisbane and we’ll be sure to give an update on his progress at that in a later edition.  More than 10 years have elapsed for one of our Inglewood State School swimmers to make it through to Darling Downs so it is certainly a doubly-sweet victory for Harry.  We wish him every success!
